What is long-tail? under Rankings and algorithms

From the Search Engine Optimization point of view, long-tail refers to the long-tail keywords. Such keywords are associated with methodology, which categorizes phrases by word count. Long-tail keywords have more than 3-words in a phrase. For example:

A phrase like, "seo tools to track rankings" is very specific and has less competition in search engines. Such keywords will bring lower amounts of traffic to your website, but the quality will be higher.

Long-tail keywords will bring highly targeted users to your website, whenever the search query will be the same as the keywords you want to rank for. They are opposite to "head" keywords, which are more broad and popular and therefore, are more frequently searched.
