Geocaching has been around for more than 20 years. Three people – Bryan Roth, Jeremy Irish, and Elias Alvord – founded the game. Geocache’s history is quite interesting, both in terms of the game rules and the technology. The History of Geocaching – 3 May 2000 Dave Ulmer, a GPS enthusiast, hid the first Geocache near Beavercreek in Oregon. He posted the coordinates on the internet and waited for what to happen. Dave called the Great American GPS Stash Hunt at that time. Two people discovered his cache in 3 days and posted their discoveries online. Geocaching is officially born. September 2000 Jeremy Irish launched Geocaching.com – a new website dedicated to geocaches. When the website was launched, only 75 geocaches were known worldwide. GPS was relatively new at the time, so only a small number of people played. It was all about to change very quickly. October to November 2000 Groundspeak Inc., also known as Geocaching HQ, was founded by Jeremy Irish (also known as Elias Alvord) and Bryan Roth to promote the geocaching game. Initial revenues to fund the company were generated by selling 144 Geocaching T-shirts. Geocaching took off in October and November 2000 when magazines, newspapers, and media outlets such as CNN began to discuss the game. – 2002 Geocaching HQ has launched Cache In Trash Out (r) (CITO). This was an environmental initiative that was supported by the rapidly growing Geocaching community. Over 333,000 volunteers have volunteered to date at over 16,000 CITO-organized events. 8,000,000+ liters have been collected. – 31 December 2007 Geocache has officially reached over 500,000 caches around the globe. 8 March 2010 Geocache has officially reached a major milestone, with over 1,000,000 caches hidden around the world. – 26 February 2013 Geocaching.com has officially registered over 2 million geocaches worldwide. – 13 September 2013 The first Geocache found in space was by American astronaut Rick Mastracchio on the International Space Station. It was hidden in 2008, five years earlier. – 9 March 2016 Launched the new Geocaching official app, allowing millions of geocache enthusiasts to access geocaches more easily. – 18 April 2017 Geocaching has reached 3 million active caches hidden around the world. Present Day Geocaching remains a strong brand, and the game is growing in popularity around the world. The most logs have been posted since 2015 in 2022. What’s more? The average geocacher discovered 43 geocaches in 2022. A massive 1,940.875 geocache hunters found at least one Geocache during the year. This shows the dedication and loyalty that millions of people around the world have for the game. 20 August 2022 was the date that had the most total finds in the community, with 640 264.
